Engagement photos are one of the most exciting parts of your wedding journey. They’re a chance to celebrate your love in a relaxed and fun setting. Your photos can be used for Save the Dates, or customized party favors, but it's also simply another beautiful way of documenting your love before the big day. Whether you’re excited or a little nervous about being in front of the camera, I'm here to guide you into feeling comfortable, confident, and looking your absolute best!

As your photographer, my goal with this blog is to help you prepare and navigate the process with ease. We'll create a relaxed and enjoyable environment where you can truly be yourselves, and all you'll need to do is show up and have fun!!

let's start - Here's what you need to know:

1. Selecting the Perfect Location

The location of your engagement shoot sets the tone for your photos, so we always advise to pick a place that holds personal significance or reflects your relationship. Whether it’s a scenic park, a charming city street, or even your own home, the location should feel authentic to you both. If you love the outdoors, consider nature-inspired spots like gardens or lakefronts. If you’re more urban, we can go for an interesting city backdrop, rooftop, or your favorite date night location.

Think about what kind of vibe you want for the photos. Are you envisioning a romantic, laid-back atmosphere or something a bit more fun and adventurous? Create a mood board to help you bring your ideas together. Once the vision is set, we can decide on location ideas that align best with your personal style.

2. Plan the outfit

Outfits play a big role in how you’ll look in your engagement photos, and I emphasize this. Here are some tips I know will help you look your best:

  • Complement, Don’t Match: Instead of wearing identical outfits, opt for clothes that complement each other. Choose a color palette that works well together. If one person wears a bold color, the other can balance it out with neutrals or a softer tone. Think about coordinating, but avoid being too “matchy-matchy.”

  • Comfort is Key: You want to feel comfortable in your clothes so you can relax during the shoot. Make sure your outfits fit well and that you feel confident in them. If you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, it will show in the photos!

  • Dress for the Season: Consider the weather when choosing outfits. For a winter shoot, layering with scarves or cozy coats adds warmth and texture. In summer, lightweight fabrics and breathable materials will keep you cool. Remember, it’s important to dress for both comfort and style

  • Textures and Layers: Adding different textures (like lace, denim, or knit fabrics) or layers can make your photos more interesting. A scarf, jacket, or sweater can create visual interest and give you more options during the shoot.

  • Avoid Distracting Patterns: While solid colors tend to work best, if you want to wear patterns, go for subtle, small prints. Avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from the main focus—your love and connection.

3. Hair and Makeup: think Enhance, Don’t Overdo It

Your engagement shoot is not the time for a drastic makeover, you’ll want to look and feel your best! Here’s how to achieve that:

  • Hair: For women, consider getting your hair done professionally, but keep it close to how you normally wear it—whether that's a blowout, soft waves, or a sleek updo - especially important to consider if your location is outdoors. For men, a fresh haircut or a quick trim before the session will help you feel polished.
  • Makeup: It’s worth investing in a professional makeup artist, especially if you're not used to wearing makeup for photos. A makeup artist will know how to apply products that photograph well (think matte foundations, subtle blush, and natural eye makeup). If you prefer to do your own, focus on enhancing your features. Keep it natural and avoid anything too heavy or trendy.
  • Touch-ups: Keep a few essentials on hand for touch-ups—like powder to reduce shine, lipstick or lip balm, and a comb or hairbrush. If you’re shooting outdoors, the wind can sometimes play with your hair, so having some quick fixes available is a good idea.

4. Practice Poses and Movements

If you’re not used to being in front of the camera, it’s natural to feel a bit awkward. So practice beforehand! Spend some time practicing poses in front of the mirror to see what feels natural. Once onsite I will direct you in a way that helps everyone look and feel relaxed.

That being said, don't be afraid to have fun with it. Candid, unscripted moments often make for the best photos. Laugh, joke around, and interact with your partner. I will guide you through the shoot, but the more relaxed and playful you are, the more authentic your photos will feel.

6. Bring Personal Touches to Make the Shoot your own

Engagement photos are a reflection of you as a couple, so don’t be afraid to include things that are meaningful to you both. If you have a shared hobby, a favorite book, or something that represents your love story, consider incorporating it into the shoot. You might bring a blanket for cozy, outdoor photos, or even your pets if they’re part of your life.

You can also think about fun props like customized jackets or a favorite bottle of bubbly.

Personal touches add authenticity and uniqueness to your photos.

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience! Engagement shoots are a wonderful opportunity to get comfortable with being in front of the camera, for us to get to know you before capturing your big day, practice your poses, and celebrate your relationship. Remember, there’s no need to stress about perfection. We capture the best photos when you’re genuinely enjoying each other’s company, not when you’re focused on “getting the perfect shot.”
